This is one thing that is always on a website owners mind. How to increase Traffic to their site. A few things we will touch on today is Search engine optimization, link building, PPC Advertising and finally making the most out of your current traffic.
Search Engine Optimization
First, you need to make sure you have your website properly optimized and that you are targeting the best keywords for your site. Having a top ranking for a low search term or one with no traffic is not going get your products and services out there to the public. It is important to have a long term and short term plan for your site. The reason being that, with new websites just starting up, it will take much link building to establish their website in the search engines to target the competitive phrases in their industry. For the short term, they will need to include a PPC budget to offset the traffic. Make sure your site is listed in the Directories like Yahoo and DMOZ, these are the main two. There are others such as GoGuides that you can get listed for a small fee, but remember that Yahoo is a must have!
PPC Advertising
As mentioned above, it is important to include some of your budget for a PPC campaign. Especially for the short term. If you only have a limited cash amount, there are some smaller PPC engines that have lower rates that you can afford for your main keywords that you want to target. The PPC industry itself is getting more and more complex, it will take sometime if you are to handle this yourself if it is your first time. You need to make sure you are targeting the proper keywords and that you are getting a good Return on Investment. One thing with PPC marketing you have to remember is, when you stop paying, you loose all traffic. The good thing about SEO work is that they money and time put in by either you or a company that you hired will continue to work in the future, as long as you do not overwrite the optimization and follow good SEO practices.
Link Building
Link building is one of the most important areas for increasing traffic to your site. First having your links on good quality sites will lead to people finding your site through the linking site, plus the more links you have, the more competitive phrases you are able to handle. There are certain spammy techniques that you will want to avoid such as link farms and free for all links. Search engines do not like these types of links and it will not be of any help and could pose as a problem in the future and penalize your site.

So you have lots of traffic to your site but your still not getting the desired leads. First thing you should do is analyze your web logs. Find out how people are finding your site, what keywords are being used, what path they are using, are they just going to the index page and then leaving? You need to analyze the paths and see where you are possibly losing customers and work to improve your site to keep them there and keep them interested so they will make the next contact. Is your site easy to navigate?
These are just some of the main points that you need to consider for improving the traffic to your website. From SEO, PPC, Link Building and analyzing your Logs, these are some of the areas that you need to consider. Logs are very important for a website and understanding the visitors habits and seeing where you are possibly losing them. Make sure you have logs, and if you do not have them, contact your hosting company and see about getting them implemented ASAP!
